Laxman Mandir , Main Market , Bharatpur, Rajasthan -
Situated in the heart of Bharatpur city, Laxman Mandir is something special. Very few temples anywhere are built only for Lord Laxman, Rama’s younger brother, and his consort Devi Urmila.
The shrine is a real symbol of Bharatpur’s royal past and still draws locals who come to offer prayers.
Building started in the mid-19th century when Maharaja Baldev Singh began work on it, and his successor Maharaja Balwant Singh wrapped things up around 1870.
Local stories say a saint called Sant Dass was the one who pushed the Bharatpur king to take on the project in the first place.
According to a theory by local people,
Bharatpur has two Laxman temples
Both are in the main market, side by side. But they are not the same.
Old Laxman Temple – 400 years old
A saint called Naaga Baba made this one. He was a very good baba who helped people. The temple is in the middle of town. His family still looks after it today.
New Laxman Temple – 150 to 300 years old
Maharaja Baldev Singh was the king who made Bharatpur city. A saint named Sant Dass told him, “Build a new big temple.”
According to local people ,When the new temple was ready, the King tried to take the old idols from the old temple. But the idols would not move! They stayed in the same place. So the King had to make new idols.
The King started making the big temple. His son, Maharaja Balwant Singh, finished it in 1870.
