Sajjangarh Palace: The Monsoon Palace & “Crown of the Aravallis”

If City Palace is Udaipur’s heart, Sajjangarh Palace is its crown.  

Perched at 944 meters above sea level in the Aravalli Hills, this white marble palace offers the best view in the entire city. Lake Pichola, Fatehsagar, the whole of Udaipur, and miles of forest — all from one terrace.

Locals call it the Monsoon Palace. Tourists call it the best sunset spot in Rajasthan. Both are right.

The Story Behind It

Construction started in 1884 under Maharana Sajjan Singh of Mewar. 

He had a very specific plan: build a 9-storey astronomical center to track monsoon clouds and predict rainfall for farmers. That’s why it got the name "Monsoon Palace". 

Sadly, the Maharana died before it was finished. His successor, Maharana Fateh Singh, completed it and turned it into a royal summer retreat. The royals would come here to escape the heat, watch the rains roll in, and do some serious stargazing.

Architecture That’s Built for the Weather

Forget heavy palaces. This one was designed to breathe.

- Material: Built entirely of white marble. At sunrise and sunset, it glows golden.  

- Structure: 5 floors with big terraces, jharokhas, fountains, and detailed jali work for airflow.  

- Design: The whole palace catches monsoon winds. Even in May, it stays cool up here.  

- Viewpoint: Top floor = 360° view. City on one side, Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary on the other.  

- Royal Vibe: This was the OG rooftop bar for the Mewar royals. Rains, wine, and stars.

Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary

The palace sits inside a 5.19 sq km wildlife sanctuary. So the drive up is half the experience.

What you might see: Peacocks, deer, sambar, wild boar, and tons of birds.  

Jeep safaris are run inside the sanctuary.  

Best time: Early morning or late evening. That’s when the animals come out, and the light is perfect.

Timings: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Last entry around 5:30 PM  

Best Time to Visit: July to October. Monsoon + post-monsoon = green hills + dramatic clouds + best sunsets  

Famous For: Sunset point, photography, pre-wedding shoots  

Fun Fact: The James Bond movie "Octopussy" was shot here. Yes, _that_ scene.

_Pro Tip_: Reach 1 hour before sunset. The light changes every 5 minutes, and it’s unreal.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It

Udaipur has lakes and palaces. But Sajjangarh gives you all of Udaipur at once.  

Standing on the terrace as the city lights start twinkling below, with the Aravallis behind you — it feels like a living painting.
